About ISST
 
Institute of Social Studies Trust (ISST) was registered as a public charitable trust in 1980. Since its inception, ISST has been committed to the cause of equity and well-being of poor and marginalised communities, with a particular focus on women. Using a gender-transformative approach, the main focus areas of ISST’s work has been -   
 
i. pursuing multi-disciplinary action research to influence policy outcomes;  
ii. conducting critical evaluation studies of state and non-state programmes, and; 
iii. direct community outreach that seeks to empower women, children and adolescent youth through leadership building, information and inputs on education 
 
Project Description: 
 
ISST is hiring a full-time Research Consultant to be engaged across two projects: 
 
i. Research Study on Microenterprises and Homebased work in the ready-made garment (RMG) sector – This study intends to generate evidence on changing economic conditions of microenterprises in terms of productivity, access to finance and organization of labor-capital relations, in the RMG sector. The study also aims to understand sources of vulnerabilities, unequal power relations, their implications, and finally, coping mechanisms and economic strategies, among home-based workers employed in these enterprises, using a gender lens. 
 
The study will follow a mixed-methods approach, using both quantitative tools such as enterprise-level surveys and qualitative research with key informants, homebased workers, intermediaries and employers.
 
ii. Gender and Economic Policy Discussion Forum – This project aims to create critical dialogues led by eminent experts who offer fresh and unique perspectives on several critical policy issues through a gendered lens. Insights and propositions from these discussions are documented and released in the form of concurrent policy briefs with the aim of producing evidence for policy design and advocacy.
 
This position may require travel to field sites. However, any such travel plan would be finalized keeping in mind considerations around safety and mobility restrictions given the current context. 
 
Roles and Responsibilities:
 
Undertaking desk-based research as per requirements of the projects and position
Following the methodology decided in collaboration with partners and designing research tools including questionnaires and participatory guides for FGDs and interviews
Coordinating between external study partners, research participants and consultants/interns (if any)
Coordinating and collecting primary data based on the research methodology and requirements of the study
Ensuring efficient data management
Conducting quantitative and qualitative analysis based on data collection and secondary research  
Periodically authoring public-facing written materials including reports, policy briefs and academic/semi-academic pieces, as per requirements of the role
 
In addition to these primary responsibilities, the Research Consultant is expected to contribute to other projects and assignments as per organisational requirements. 

Qualifications and Experience: 

•At least Masters in Social Sciences (Economics, Sociology, Gender Studies) along with 3-4 years of experience of working with women in marginalized settings. Experience of working with women informal workers is highly desirable. 
•Proven ability to work across quantitative and qualitative research methods. Prior experience of working with quantitative surveys, digital modes of data collection and/or reflexive methodologies would be an added advantage.  
•Ability to write coherently in high quality English. Prior experience of authoring/contributing to high-quality publications is highly desirable
•Ability to work with an interdisciplinary and intersectional lens, especially with a focus on gender analysis, women and work, informal employment and value chain analysis 
•Ability to work in a team as well as deliver on individual components on time
•Fluent in Hindi and English

Period of Engagement:11 months beginning 10th June 2021. 

Consultancy fee:Between 45,000 – 50,000 per month, depending on educational qualification and experience
