Ms. Aayesha Saxena , Research Consultant

Aayesha Saxena has completed her MPhil and is in her final year of Ph.D. at Centre for Study of Law and Governance, Jawaharlal Nehru University. Her thesis explores the understanding and perceptions around the idea of legitimacy and state-making in the conflict-ridden state of Jharkhand. She holds a masters degree in Development Studies from Ambedkar University, Delhi. At the core of her research interest issue at the interstices of gender, labor, development, and the political economy of conflict. At ISST, she is a part of two studies titled “Collective action in Digital Economy: Opportunities and Challenges for Women Workers” and “Microenterprises and Home-Based Work in Garment Value Chains: Existing Issues, New Challenges, and the Way Forward”.

Previously, she has worked as an External Collaborator with International Labour Organization’s Work in Freedom Project that aims at reducing vulnerability to trafficking and forced labor for women along migration pathways in South Asia. Her responsibilities stretched from desk-based research to documenting case stories on mapping vulnerabilities in migration for domestic and garment work, in addition to analyzing migration as a tool of empowerment for tribal women in the Indian states of Jharkhand, Chhattisgarh, and Odisha. She was also involved with SEWA Bharat as a Consultant for policy advocacy on best practices for Indian Cooperatives to thrive under the aegis of the reputed Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation. She was responsible to design the research, identifying the relevant literature and gaps, and subsequently collaborating with relevant stakeholders to strengthen the policy advocacy for India’s Cooperative Sector.
