Creating Momentum for Gender Transformative Programming and Advancing Gender - Sponsored by BMGF

March, 2020

ISST has received a grant from the Bill and Melinda Gates foundation (BMGF) for a four-year project titled, ‘Creating Momentum for Gender Transformative Programming and Advancing Gender Equity’. This project aims to enhance the understanding and capacities of a gender- integrated approach in a range of policy and programme areas. The Inception phase of the project, which started in January, 2018 will be used to develop a detailed programme of work for the project. The inception phase of the project began with a series of policy dialogues.

One of the primary outcomes of the project that has emerged during the dialogues in the inception period is “Contributing to the integration of gender into existing policies/ programmes: addressing barriers and identifying opportunities”. Second major issue that has emerged during the inception period is “building capacity in gender and development”, which is the second primary outcome of the project.

There are several projects coordinated by ISST researchers.

An Exploratory Study on Women Workers in the Gig Economy in India

This is a qualitative study which aims to understand how women workers are placed in the gig economy (mainly app-based platforms) in India. We aim to analyse and understand how women workers are posited in this new and technology-driven form of work; how is the sector different within the gig economy versus the 'traditional'  form of work; what are the gendered forms of challenges that they face as gig workers ; and what needs to be improved in order for the gig economy to become a potential work space for women in India. For this purpose, we are looking at four main sectors wherein women gig workers are found to be concentrated in India: Domestic Work, Beauty Work, Cab Drivers and Delivery Workers; in three cities of Delhi - NCR, Bengaluru and Mumbai.

Understanding rights of women workers in the face of urban resettlement

This study aims to understand the multitude of challenges faced by informal women workers in the context of resettlement in India, from lack of continuous access to decent work to difficulties in accessing basic services post-resettlement. It further tries to unpack the ways in which poorly planned city spaces and urban resettlements evoke gendered experiences of eviction and relocation and open up the conceptual compartmentalization of “private”, “public”, “home”, “workspace”, and “city spaces”.
