National Workshop on Gender Development
Organized by
Women’s Studies and Development Centre, (Advanced Studies), Delhi University in Collaboration with Institute of Social Studies Trust (ISST)
11th February, 2019 – 16th February, 2019
Concept Note
The discipline of gender and women studies has had a long evolutionary journey. It is an interface which examines gender as a social construct which cuts across different categories of class, caste, religion, region and linguistic diversities. Unlike the general belief it explores the world of both femininity and masculinity. The discipline of gender and women studies brought the issues of unequal distribution of power and resources to the fore. The development of different theories try to explain reason of this unequal distribution and try to understand the nature of discrimination and violence inflicted against a particular gender. It is an ever growing discipline through its expanding interfaces with challenging realities and growing academic engagements.
The Women Studies and Development Centre (WSDC) of the University of Delhi, in collaboration with Institute of Social Studies Trust (ISST) endeavour in this workshop to explore gender development through academic and activists’ engagement. At the heart of asymmetry of power in gender relations lies the material base of social construction of genders. Control of resources, and cultural bias in favour of one gender, have leadto multivariate inequalities that get further entrenched in practice. If development policies remain oblivious to this uneven terrain to say the least, it would only lead to skewed development and reinforce pervading gender inequalities. There is an urgent need for discussion and research in all subject disciplines to address this important area.
The focus of the workshop is to introduce and discuss frameworks of analysis of gender and development, include current issues especially women’s paid and unpaid work in all its manifestations. Discussions around political economy; state interventions, empowerment and culture would be the running themes across sessions.
Research is an important terrain through which gender is included in subject disciplines and inroads are made in public policies. The workshop aims at encouraging and facilitating research in the area.
